Best Budget Hostels in Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is not a dorm-bed island, but it is possible to stay cheaply. Here is where and how.

Koh Lanta is a laid-back island where most low-cost accommodation is guesthouses, simple bungalows and shophouse rooms, with a smaller number of hostel-style places. It is not a classic backpacker hub with rows of dormitory hostels.

That changes how you search. Instead of looking only for hostels, filter by price and property type, and choose the area first: budget prices depend more on where you stay than on what the place calls itself.

We don't list hostel names or nightly rates here, because both change too quickly to be useful. This page shows where the cheap places are and what to check before you book.

Where the budget options are

These are the three parts of the island where low-cost stays are most common.

We don't rank individual hotels on this page. Rates, availability and guest scores change daily and live on the booking partner's page, so the useful thing we can do independently is help you pick the right kind of place and the right part of the beach, then search live for your dates. Klong Khong

Budget beachfront

Koh Lanta's most budget-friendly beachfront stretch, known for simple bungalow-style accommodation and beach bars. It is the best area if you want a cheap stay with the sea on your doorstep.

  • Simple bungalows close to the sand
  • Beach bars and a laid-back atmosphere
  • Rockier and shallower at low tide, so check swimming conditions
  • Quieter than Long Beach

Best for: Backpackers and budget travellers who still want a beachfront base

Old Town and Saladan

The cheapest, most local base

Saladan is the ferry-pier town at the north tip. Old Town is the historic stilt-house village on the east coast. Both have the island's cheapest guesthouses and shophouse rooms, but no swimmable beach on the doorstep.

  • Lowest rates on the island
  • Shops, banks and ferry ticket offices within walking distance in Saladan
  • No real swimming beach in town
  • Useful for early ferries

Best for: Travellers on the tightest budgets, or needing an early ferry

Long Beach guesthouses

Cheap and central

Long Beach is not the cheapest zone, but it has plenty of simple guesthouses set back from the sand. You may pay a little more than in Klong Khong but you are close to the most restaurants and nightlife.

  • Most restaurants and nightlife on the island
  • Cheaper rooms are usually set back from the beach
  • Compare fan and air-conditioned rates
  • Good for meeting other travellers

Best for: Solo travellers who want a social, central base

What to expect at Koh Lanta's cheapest places

  • Fewer dorms than you might expect. If a dormitory bed is essential, search on the booking page and filter by property type. Otherwise a private guesthouse room can cost only a little more.
  • Fan versus air conditioning. Cheaper rooms often have fans only. Consider whether you will sleep well in the heat outside the cooler weeks.
  • Seasonal closures. Many low-cost properties close for part or all of the May to October rains. Confirm your dates are open.
  • Transport costs. A cheap room far from the action can cost more once you pay for scooters or taxis, so factor that in.

Ways to keep costs down

  • Travel in the shoulder season. April and October are noticeably cheaper than the peak weeks from December to February, with less crowding.
  • Book flexible rates for the rains. Weather is unpredictable in the wet months, so a free-cancellation rate protects you.
  • Eat where locals eat. Food is where you can save most. Our budget guide covers realistic daily costs.

Frequently asked questions

A few, but the island's low-cost accommodation is mostly guesthouses and simple bungalows rather than dormitory hostels. Search the booking page and filter by property type to see what is currently available for your dates.

Klong Khong beach guide

It is more laid-back and family-oriented than a full backpacker hub, but budget travellers do well on Klong Khong and Long Beach. Bring realistic expectations about dorms.

Is Koh Lanta expensive?

Many close for at least part of May to October. Those that stay open often drop their rates, so it can be a good time for a cheap stay if you accept the weather.
