Koh Lanta is not an expensive island by international standards, and it can be done on a tight budget or a generous one. What you spend depends far more on your choices than on the destination: where you sleep, how you get around, how often you take organised tours, and how much you eat in beachfront restaurants versus local places. We don't publish live prices for hotels or restaurants because they change with the season and the venue, so the ranges below are estimates to plan with, not quotes.
Accommodation is usually the biggest variable. The island ranges from simple bungalows and hostels to upscale resorts, and rates rise noticeably in the high season (roughly November to April) and fall in the wetter months. Compare current rates for your dates on a booking platform rather than relying on any figure in a guide.
Getting to the island and around it is the second big item. Transfers from Krabi Airport are a fixed cost, and getting around by rented scooter is generally cheaper than repeated taxis, though it carries its own risks and insurance considerations. Organised day trips and island tours are the main optional splurge.
Food can be very affordable if you eat where locals eat, and more expensive at beachfront restaurants with sea views. Cash is still widely needed, so factor in ATM fees. A realistic daily budget, by travel style
These are per-person ranges for a normal day on the island, with a shared room. They exclude flights, travel insurance and the transfer to and from the island, which you pay once. The ranges are our editorial estimate, the same used in the calculator on this page; they are not prices collected from businesses.

How to keep costs down without missing out
- Travel in the shoulder months: late April or early November often combine lower room rates with workable weather. See dry season vs rainy season.
- Pick your beach for walking distance: staying near restaurants avoids paying for rides every evening. See where to stay.
- Choose one or two big boat days, not one every day, and fill the rest with free beaches and viewpoints.
- Eat where locals eat for most meals and keep the sunset restaurant for one or two evenings.

Cash, ATM fees and bank charges
Cash is still the main way to pay on Koh Lanta: small restaurants, beach bars, market stalls, scooter shops, songthaews and the national park gate usually want baht. Larger hotels and some established restaurants take cards, sometimes with a surcharge.
Thai ATMs charge a foreign card fee on top of your own bank's charges, typically around 220 THB per withdrawal (noted September 2026, set by Thai banks and subject to change). Withdrawing larger amounts less often reduces the total. If an ATM or terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, choosing baht is usually the better option. Tipping
Tipping isn't compulsory on Koh Lanta, and there is no fixed rate we can honestly quote. Leaving the small change or a modest tip for good service in a restaurant, for a massage or for a boat crew is a kind gesture, not an obligation. Keep small notes for it, since larger notes can be hard to break at small stalls.
