Long Beach, also called Phra Ae, is the longest and busiest beach on Koh Lanta and has the widest choice of places to stay on the island. That choice is the problem: the strip runs for several kilometres, and where you sleep along it changes how easy it is to walk to dinner, how quiet your nights are and how far you are from the piers.

One thing to know first: Koh Lanta is seasonal. November to April is the dry, busy season, and some smaller properties close for part of the May to October rains, so confirm that your dates are open.

Where on Long Beach to stay

The strip is long, so location within it matters more than most people expect.

  • Near the restaurants and bars. The central stretch has the densest concentration of places to eat and drink. It is convenient and lively, and it is also the noisiest part after dark.
  • The quieter ends. Move away from the centre and the strip gets calmer. You will probably want a scooter or taxis for dinner, but you will sleep better. Our guide to getting around explains the options.
  • Access to the piers. Long Beach is central on the west coast: closer to the ferry piers than Kantiang Bay, further than Klong Dao. Allow time for the transfer on arrival and departure days.

What to check before you book

A few checks avoid most of the disappointments on Koh Lanta.

  • Open dates. Confirm the property operates in your month. Smaller places often shut for part of the rains.
  • Air conditioning. Confirm it, especially outside the cooler December to January weeks.
  • Beach distance. Check whether the sand is directly outside, across the road or a walk away, and how the beach looks at low tide.
  • Recent reviews. Standards change with management. Read the most recent reviews, not the highest-rated ones from years ago.
  • Cancellation terms. Rainy-season weather can shift plans, so a flexible rate can be worth a small premium.
