Klong Dao Beach, Koh Lanta: Calm Water Near Saladan Pier

Klong Dao is the first main beach you meet after Saladan pier, a long, gently curving strip of pale sand facing west over the Andaman Sea. The water is shallow and generally calm in the dry season, which is why it is the go-to choice for families with small children. It is quieter than Long Beach and less rustic than Klong Khong, with a relaxed mix of resorts, bungalows, cafes and beach restaurants.

What to see and do at Klong Dao

• Swim and paddle: the shallow, gently sloping water suits young children and less confident swimmers. Conditions change in the rainy season, so check for flags before swimming.
• Sunset from the sand: the beach faces west, so the sun sets straight over the sea, and beach bars and restaurants set tables on the sand in the evening.
• Long beach walks: the beach is broad and walkable, with less traffic on the sand than at busier resorts.
• Easy errands: Saladan's shops, ATMs, pharmacies and 7-Elevens are close, which is handy for the first and last days of a trip.
• Cafes and beachfront restaurants: a good spread of casual seafood and Thai places, plus a few international options. It is quieter at night than Long Beach.

Getting there and who it suits

Klong Dao is a short ride south of Saladan, the island's main pier, so it has the shortest transfer on arrival and departure. Taxis and songthaews serve the beach, and many visitors use a rented scooter for the rest of the island.

It suits families, short stays and anyone who wants an easy arrival, at a mid-range price level. If you want livelier bars and more restaurants, look further south to Long Beach. If you prefer wilder and simpler, Klong Khong and beyond are quieter.

Like most of the west coast, Klong Dao is at its best from November to April. In the rainy season the sea can be rougher, some small businesses close and swimming may be limited on bad days.
