Klong Dao is the first main beach you meet after Saladan pier, about 2 km south of the island's arrival point, and the easiest place to land on Koh Lanta. Is Klong Dao the best beach for families, and how do you get there?
Klong Dao is about 2 km from Saladan pier: five minutes by car or tuk-tuk and half an hour on foot. The main road 4245 runs behind the beach, roughly 100 m from the sand at the southern end and 700 m at the northern end. Lanta Old Town is about 25 minutes away and the national park at the southern tip about 50 minutes.

There are no metered taxis and no ride-hailing apps on the island, so agree the price before you get in. For the journey to the island itself, read getting to Koh Lanta: from Krabi allow 2 to 3 hours by shared minivan, ferry included, and Klong Dao is the first beach you reach, so the last stretch to your hotel is short.
Swim from mid-tide to high tide, when the water is deep enough close to shore. At low tide the sea withdraws a long way and leaves a wide flat of sand and rock, so plan around the tide rather than the clock. From May to October the south-west swell brings rip currents to the west coast, so stay in the shallows when the sea is rough.
The beach suits families, first-time visitors and short stays, at a mid-range price level. For livelier evenings and more restaurants, Long Beach is the next beach south. For cheaper, more relaxed and a little more character, look at Klong Khong or Klong Nin in the middle of the island.
The dry season, November to April, is the reliable window: clear water, calm sea and everything open. From May to October the sea is rougher, some small businesses shut and swimming is limited on bad days.
Evenings are calm. The restaurants and cafes sit along the sand and the road behind it, with a handful of beach bars, and the mood is far quieter than on Long Beach. That suits families and early nights, and it is the reason travellers who want bars go one beach south.
