Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi: How to Choose Your Island

The character of each island

Koh Lanta is a long, mostly low-key island with beaches strung along its west coast, an Old Town on stilts on the east side, and a national park at the southern tip. Development is spread out, so no single strip dominates. It attracts families, couples, long-stay visitors and travellers who like a quiet base with the option of a scooter for exploring.

Koh Phi Phi is smaller and far more concentrated. Most visitors stay on Phi Phi Don, where the main village sits on a narrow isthmus between two bays, and the limestone cliffs around it are what most people come for. It is busy with day-trippers, and its social and nightlife scene is livelier than anything on Koh Lanta. Phi Phi Don is essentially car-free, so you get around on foot or by boat.

Beaches, sea and scenery

Koh Lanta's appeal is length and calm: broad west-coast beaches where you can walk for a long way without a crowd, with a different feel from one bay to the next. Swimming conditions change by season, so check local flags in the rainy months.

Phi Phi's appeal is drama: steep limestone walls, viewpoints over the twin bays and clear water. Its beaches are smaller and more crowded, especially in the middle of the day when day-trip boats arrive. If a postcard landscape matters more to you than space, Phi Phi delivers; if you want to spread out a towel and read, Lanta usually does it better.

Nightlife, food and pace

Koh Lanta's evenings revolve around beach restaurants, low-key bars and the occasional fire show, and our nightlife guide explains how that varies from Long Beach to Old Town. Phi Phi has a more active bar and party scene, which suits some travellers and rules the island out for others.

Doing both

The two islands are linked by passenger boats, and many itineraries split a trip between them. Schedules are seasonal and weather can cancel crossings in the rainy months, so confirm current departure times with an operator or your accommodation before you commit to a tight plan. If you have only a few days, picking one base and doing the other as a day out (or skipping it) usually beats spending half your trip in transit.

A useful rule of thumb: pick one base for at least three nights, and only add the second island if you are happy to spend a travel day on it.
