Where the Full Moon Party really is

The Full Moon Party is held on Haad Rin beach on Koh Phangan, off the east coast of southern Thailand near Koh Samui. Getting there from Koh Lanta means a boat back to the mainland, a long transfer across the peninsula and another ferry: a full day in each direction, and more in bad weather.

If the party is the point of your trip, plan it as its own leg, with a few nights on Koh Phangan, rather than as an excursion from Lanta. The date follows the lunar calendar and occasionally moves around Buddhist holidays, so check it on the organisers' official channels close to your travel dates rather than trusting a date copied from an old blog.

What a night out on Koh Lanta looks like

Evenings on Lanta are built around beach bars: low tables and cushions on the sand, lanterns in the trees, a sound system or a guitarist, and the sunset as the main event. Several bars take turns hosting the busier nights of the week, so the liveliest place on a Tuesday is not necessarily the liveliest on a Friday.

Live music is the backbone of the scene: acoustic sets, reggae and cover bands rather than big-name DJs. Fire shows are common on the sand at the busier bars. The whole thing is noticeably calmer than Phuket or Koh Phi Phi, which is precisely why many visitors choose Lanta, and why others are disappointed if they expected a party island.

Because the programme rotates and changes between seasons, we do not print a weekly schedule that would be wrong by next month. The reliable way to find out what is on tonight is to look at the posters and flyers along the main road, ask at your guesthouse, or ask the staff at whichever bar you end up in.

Traveller Lane, Long Beach

If Koh Lanta has a going-out street, it is Traveller Lane at Long Beach. It runs parallel to the beach, about a hundred metres back from the sand, and over the years it has become the place where people gather after dinner. It is now marked on maps, and most visitors find it on their first evening.

It is small by Thai standards: a string of bars, restaurants and small shops rather than a strip of clubs. Prices there tend to run higher than on the main road, which is the trade-off for the atmosphere. From Traveller Lane it is a short walk down to the beach bars on Long Beach itself.

Nights on the other beaches

Away from Long Beach the evenings get quieter as you go south. Klong Dao in the north is popular with families and has restaurants more than bars. Klong Khong and Klong Nin have a few relaxed beach bars that suit a sunset drink and an early night, with the odd live music evening in high season.

Further south, around Kantiang Bay and the national park end of the island, nights are mostly about dinner at your resort. That is not a flaw: plenty of visitors come to Lanta precisely for this. If you want a bit of life after dark, sleeping on or near Long Beach keeps Traveller Lane within walking distance.

High season and low season

The nightlife follows the tourist season. From November to April the bars are open, the rotating nights run most of the week and Long Beach feels lively. From May to October, the rainy season, many beach bars close or open only on some nights, and the island becomes very quiet after dinner.

If going out matters to you, the months around Christmas, New Year and February are the busiest. In the shoulder weeks of late October or early May, check which bars are actually open before choosing where to stay, since a closed strip of bars can make a beach feel far emptier than the photos suggest.

Getting home safely

Lanta's coast road is dark, narrow in places and shared with dogs and scooters. After a few drinks, do not ride a scooter home: ask the bar to call a tuk-tuk or taxi, agree the price before you leave and keep your accommodation's name written down. Many bars will arrange a ride on request.

Keep an eye on your drink as you would anywhere, carry a little cash since not every beach bar takes cards, and do not swim at night after drinking, especially on beaches with currents. None of this is specific to Koh Lanta, but the relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to forget.

Staying near Long Beach makes the trip home simplest: from Traveller Lane and the beach bars you can walk, ideally with a torch or your phone light, since many side lanes are unlit. If you are staying further south, plan your ride back at dinner, because fewer drivers are around late at night.
