Koh Lanta or Ao Nang/Krabi: How to Choose

What each place is like

Ao Nang is a developed beach resort with a busy main strip, a wide choice of restaurants, bars, tour desks and shops, and boat services from the beach and nearby piers. The beach itself is scenic, with limestone cliffs and islands offshore, but it is town-like rather than remote.

Koh Lanta is deliberately less built up. Beaches run along the west coast with small resorts, restaurants and shops scattered between them, and the Old Town on the east coast adds a cultural side that Ao Nang doesn't really have. There is nothing like Ao Nang's density of options, and that is exactly why people choose it.

Getting there and getting around

Ao Nang is the more convenient of the two: it sits on the mainland close to Krabi's airport and town. Koh Lanta needs a road transfer that can include a car-ferry crossing, so budget a couple of hours each way from Krabi airport and check current routing before you book onward plans.

Once there, Ao Nang is walkable in its core with local transport for beaches further out. Koh Lanta is more spread out and most visitors rely on a rented scooter, taxis or songthaews.

Beaches and day trips

For beach time, Koh Lanta generally offers more space and quieter sand. For variety of day trips, Ao Nang's location gives easy access to the mainland-coast boat trips typical of Krabi, while Koh Lanta's boat days head to Koh Rok, Koh Haa, Koh Kradan and the mangroves.

Either base works for exploring Krabi province, but on Koh Lanta you plan around one or two big outings rather than hopping between them daily.

Who should pick which

Pick Ao Nang for a short trip, for maximum convenience and choice, or if you plan to be out on tours most days. Pick Koh Lanta for a week or more of unhurried beach time, for families who want calmer water and quieter evenings, or if you are happy to trade choice for atmosphere. If you have time, a few nights of each is a good compromise: land on the mainland, then head to the island.
