Missed the Koh Lanta Ferry or Last Minivan? Your Plan B

If you missed the ferry or the last minivan to Koh Lanta, or your boat was cancelled, the fastest fix is usually the road route by minivan or taxi and the car ferry, which runs more consistently than the passenger boats. Passenger ferries are mainly a high-season (roughly November to April) service and depend on the sea. The road route does not, so it is your default plan B. First, check what you actually hold. If you booked a ticket or a transfer through your hotel, an agent or a booking platform, open the confirmation and contact them straight away: they can often move you to the next sailing or vehicle, or tell you whether a refund applies. Write down the operator name and the pier or pick-up point before you call, it saves a lot of confusion when you are on the phone in a busy terminal.

Second, tell your accommodation. Send a message with your new estimated arrival time. Late arrivals are normal on the island, and a host who knows you are coming will keep your room and, in many cases, help you find a driver. This matters most if you will arrive after dark, when reception may otherwise be closed.

Third, switch to the road route. From Krabi, a minivan or taxi to the car ferry crossing and on to the island is the option that keeps running when boats do not, and it is the one most travellers use outside the ferry season anyway. Expect the journey from the mainland to take a few hours door to door, so a late-evening start can mean a very late arrival. If it is already late, an overnight stay on the mainland and an early start can be less stressful than a rushed night transfer; that is a judgement call that depends on how much you would lose by waiting.

Fourth, if the boat was cancelled for weather, do not wait for it to reappear on the same day. Sea conditions are the usual reason, and they change slowly. Ask the operator whether the next departure is confirmed, and treat the road route as the safer plan while you wait.

Prevention is simple. Never book a tight connection: leave a comfortable buffer between a flight landing and any onward ferry or minivan, and avoid a same-day flight home right after a boat crossing. Book transport a few days ahead in peak season or around holidays, keep the confirmation and the operator's contact on your phone, and choose a transfer that includes the car-ferry crossing so that a single driver is responsible for the whole trip.
