What to check before booking

• Drop-off point. Confirm the transfer goes to your hotel and not to a central drop-off.
• Car ferry. The route may include a short car ferry crossing. This is normal and usually included.
• Timing. Don't plan a same-day onward activity or ferry right after landing.
• Late flights. Check that the operator tracks flights or can wait if you are delayed.
• Cancellation. Confirm the terms in case your flight changes.

The options side by side

Every option uses the same road and the same car ferry from Ban Hua Hin Pier to Ban Khlong Mak Pier on Koh Lanta Noi. What changes is who shares the vehicle, how many stops you make and who takes responsibility if something goes wrong.

• Shared minivan. Door to door at the long end of the 1.5 to 3 hour range if yours is the last drop-off. Best for solo travellers and couples with light luggage. Watch for waiting until the van fills and a drop-off at a central point instead of your hotel.
• Private transfer. The short end of the range, with no other stops. Best for families, groups, late arrivals and lots of luggage. Confirm the car-ferry fare is included and that the driver waits if your flight is late.
• Taxi from the arrivals hall. Similar timing to a private transfer once you are moving. A fallback when nothing is booked. Agree the full price, ferry and drive to your beach included, before you get in.
• Passenger boat. Not from the airport: a road leg to Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi Town, then a ferry to Saladan published at 1 h 30 to 2 h, on schedules that cover November to April. Rarely simpler than the road from the airport.

How to compare two offers

Two quotes for the same route can hide very different trips. Before you pay, put the offers side by side and check the same points on each.

• The end point. Your hotel by name, not "Koh Lanta" or "Saladan". A transfer to the pier only leaves you to find a songthaew or taxi for the last stretch.
• What the price covers. The car ferry, luggage, a late-night pickup and the drive to the southern beaches. A low fare with add-ons on the day often ends up costing more.
• Who you deal with. A named operator with a phone or messaging contact that answers, rather than a reseller with no local number.
• Recent reviews. Read the latest ones, not the average: punctuality, driving and whether the driver was at arrivals are what matter on this route.
• Written confirmation. A voucher with the pickup point, the time, the vehicle type and the cancellation terms.

Arrival day: what to expect

The drive leaves the airport, heads south on Highway 4 and joins the queue at Ban Hua Hin Pier. The crossing itself takes about 10 minutes (about 20 in another source), but in high season the queue can add over an hour. You stay in or near the vehicle, then drive across Koh Lanta Noi and the Siri Lanta bridge to Saladan.

• From Saladan to your beach. About 5 minutes to Klong Dao, 10 to 20 minutes to Long Beach, around 40 minutes to Klong Nin and 40 to 45 minutes to Kantiang Bay.
• Late arrivals. Tell your accommodation your arrival time, since reception may be closed after dark, and keep your driver's contact on your phone. If you land very late, a night near the airport and a morning transfer is a sensible option.
• Bad weather. The road route does not depend on the passenger boats and runs all year; heavy rain slows the drive and the ferry queue.
• Cash. Carry some Thai baht for small costs on the way and on arrival.

Season and booking

High season, roughly November to April and busiest from December to February, is when transfers and ferry queues fill up. In the rainy season, roughly May to October, the road and car ferry remain the reliable way in.

• High season. Book a few days ahead to get a guaranteed seat, and add margin for the ferry queue.
• Rainy season. Fewer travellers and shorter queues, but slower driving in heavy rain.
• Going back. For your departure, count the ferry queue into the time to the airport and leave earlier than a map app suggests, especially from the southern beaches.
