Kantiang Bay, Koh Lanta: Jungle-Backed Bay in the South

Kantiang Bay is the postcard version of Koh Lanta: a sheltered, crescent-shaped bay with soft sand, clear water and jungle-covered hills rising behind it. It is one of the island's quietest areas and home to most of its upscale resorts. It is also further from the ferry piers than any other main beach, which is exactly why it feels so calm.

What to see and do at Kantiang Bay

• A sheltered swim: the bay is more protected than many west-coast beaches and is often good for swimming in the dry season. Check conditions after heavy weather.
• Sunset viewpoints: the hills around the bay offer some of the best sunset views on the island.
• Upscale resorts and spas: most of Koh Lanta's top-end resorts sit in or near this bay, along with a small number of restaurants and beach bars.
• A base for the south: the national park at Laem Tanod and the wild beaches of the south are a short ride from here.

Getting there and who it suits

Kantiang Bay is roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road from Saladan pier, so plan for a longer transfer both ways. The road is hilly with sharp bends, so take care on a scooter. Mobile signal is patchy further south.

Facilities are more limited than in the northern beaches. There are fewer shops, ATMs and nightlife options, so bring cash and expect to eat mostly at your resort or a handful of local places.

It suits honeymooners, couples and travellers who prioritise scenery and a resort stay over nightlife. It is not the best choice if you want to be near the piers or a lively strip.
