Phuket to Koh Lanta is a considerably longer trip than the Krabi route, so it's worth planning around rather than treating as an afterthought. By road (minivan or private transfer, usually including a car-ferry crossing near Krabi), the journey commonly takes around five to six hours, depending on traffic and the exact route. In the high season, a passenger ferry connection is sometimes available and can cut the trip down, but, as with all Koh Lanta ferry routes, it isn't guaranteed to run every day or every month, so confirm before relying on it.

Given the distance, many travellers who land in Phuket first spend a night there (or in Krabi en route) rather than pushing straight through in one go, especially after a long international flight. If you do go direct, a private transfer is more comfortable for a trip this long than a shared minivan, since you won't be waiting on other passengers' stops along the way.

Whichever option you pick, build in a buffer: a half-day journey can easily become a full day if a ferry connection is delayed or the road route hits traffic around Phuket town or Krabi. Booking your onward Koh Lanta accommodation with a late check-in, or avoiding same-day activity bookings for your arrival day, removes a lot of unnecessary stress.

Compared with Krabi, Phuket only makes sense as a gateway if the flights are much cheaper or you're combining destinations. Otherwise the extra hours on the road are hard to justify for a stay focused on Koh Lanta.
